This is my first attempt at creating a few cartoon characters after following the Spike the Cat tutorial.

Spike The Cat is probably the definitive work on the web with respect to working with vectors.

I worked through the tutorial and after about 20 minutes I understood vectors enough to create the images on this page.

I should point out that I am by no means an artist, They were created using PSP version 7.

Basically, I just started by drawing 2 round vector sectors, and played around with them a little bit. Edited the nodes, pushed, pulled, and noticed the outline of a head taking shape.

Once I got the basic head shape the way I wanted, it was a simple matter of filling in the features. Once I had that done, I just played a little more to fine tune them somewhat.

I started with the upper head part, then pulled and pushed out the 2 ears, connected them, and went from there.

Well after playing around with these little fella's, this is what I came up with:

I was surprised at just how "easy" it is to draw using vectors. I know for a fact I could not have drawn any of these characters free hand using a pencil and paper, because I'm nothing close to artistic. But they just seem to come together in PSP.

Of course the real nice thing is that if you do make a mistake no wait, thats not the right word. You really can't make a mistake. You just decide the character dosen't loook right. But anyway if it's not coming out the way you want, you can either hit your Un-Do button to back out to where you want, or just select the whole vector and delete it.

If you have not played around too much with vector shapes, I highly recommend you visit the link at the top of this page and walk through Ron's Shape Cat tutorial.

It is very well laid out, easy to understand and follow along, and most importantly, you will actually learn how to work with and manipulate vector shapes.

In case your wondering..... To make a vector circle with the PSP7 shape tool, you have to select the eclipse tool and hold down the SHIFT key while dragging out that shape. This makes a circle....

Who would have guessed????? :)

Thanks to the gang on the Paint Shop Pro newsgroup for their help with that problem.....
